Red Poppy Festival 2026 (Georgetown, TX) – Access Guide

At A Glance

Red Poppy Festival is a free annual spring festival held in downtown Georgetown, Texas, with live music, vendors, food, and festival activities spread throughout the Square and surrounding downtown streets. Many areas are accessible with a mobility scooter, though parking, heavy crowds, outdoor weather conditions, and occasional surface transitions may create challenges.

Accessibility Rating: Mixed

Some accessible features, but noticeable challenges exist.

What We Observed

Parking

Parking is in high demand for this event, and it is something mobility scooter users should plan for in advance. While the festival provided designated accessible parking at 10th and Main Streets and at 8th and Forest Streets, both accessible lots were already full when we arrived. We ultimately had to search for parking on the surrounding city streets.

We recommend reviewing the official festival parking map before you go, so you know all parking options. In addition to the designated accessible parking lots, the map identified public garages, downtown lots, and permitted street parking locations. There were also shuttle buses running during the event from Georgetown High School and East View High School, along with a designated passenger drop-off/pick-up area.

Entrance & Access Points

Red Poppy Festival was an open public event with no single defined entrance, since activities were spread throughout the Georgetown Square and surrounding downtown streets. Because the festival was free to attend, there were no ticket checkpoints or controlled entry gates during our visit.

Access points varied depending on which side of the festival you approached from. While curb cutouts and marked crosswalks were available throughout the downtown area, some outer event edges were defined by temporary barricades that directed entry toward specific crossing locations rather than allowing access from every block approach.

We approached from the Austin Avenue / 6th Street side, where barricades required us to continue to a designated crossing point before entering the festival area near the Police and First Aid tents. Based on what we observed, access from the north side near the designated accessible parking appeared more direct. Once inside the festival area, we did not encounter significant access barriers entering different activity areas.

Surfaces

The event took place across typical downtown city streets, sidewalks, and public gathering areas, with surfaces that were workable for mobility scooters throughout our visit. We encountered a mix of asphalt streets, brick sidewalks, concrete transition areas, and some grassy gathering spaces around the courthouse lawn where attendees set up chairs and blankets for the main stage.

The paved event areas worked well for both of our scooters, with only mild slopes or slightly angled ground that required normal awareness but did not create significant problems. The grassy courthouse lawn seating area was a different surface than the paved festival routes, so we stayed focused on the paved event areas for easier navigation.

The one surface issue we encountered involved temporary rubber cord covers placed over electrical lines serving vendor booths and event areas. In at least one location, the cover was tall enough that one of our scooters bottomed out while crossing it, while the other cleared it without issue. Scooter ground clearance may make a difference in how easily those temporary transitions are handled.

Event Layout & Navigation

The festival was spread throughout Georgetown’s downtown Square and surrounding streets, with different activities taking place in multiple areas rather than one contained event space. Vendor booths were set up in different configurations depending on the street, with some lining curbside parking areas and others placed in the center of the street with room to travel on either side.

Navigation on our scooters was generally straightforward once inside the festival footprint. The downtown street grid made it easy to move between different activity areas, performance spaces, and vendor sections without feeling locked into one specific route. We did not encounter major navigation barriers beyond the temporary cord covers noted in the Surfaces section.

Directional signs were placed at street intersections to help attendees locate stages, restrooms, parking, shuttle access, and other key festival areas. Those signs also included a QR code linking to the festival map, which could be helpful if you want to orient yourself before moving across the event.

Seating, Shade & Gathering Areas

Seating and shade options varied throughout the festival depending on where you were. Along the parade route, many attendees either stood, sat along the curbs, or brought their own lawn chairs, while mobility scooter users could remain in their scooters to watch the parade.

The Red Poppy Stage area offered a mix of seating options. Folding chairs were set up closer to the stage, while farther back people gathered in their own chairs or on blankets in the street and around the grassy courthouse lawn. For mobility scooter users, staying on the paved area behind the folding chairs would offer an easier viewing option without needing to navigate the lawn.

Standard downtown benches could be found along some sidewalk corners throughout the Square. Near the Mayfair and Celebrate stages, we also found low wall seating and a few picnic tables where a mobility scooter could be parked nearby while enjoying the live music.

Trees around portions of the Square and some sidewalks provided shade, while other sections, including open streets and major viewing areas, offered little to no cover. We recommend planning ahead for both sun and changing weather conditions.

Event Activities & Features

Red Poppy Festival offered a wide mix of entertainment and family-friendly activities throughout the weekend. Festival programming included live music across multiple stages, along with events such as the Red Poppy Parade, classic car show, Poppy Patch Kids Zone, Touch-A-Truck, BMX stunt shows, the POPP Pup Parade, and a meet-and-greet with Chet Garner from The Daytripper.

During our visit, we also paused for a while at the Mayfair Stage to enjoy Michael Alexandersson, a former contestant from The Voice, which offered a different pace from the larger festival spaces. The festival also included several fun photo opportunities around downtown, including the large RED POPPY display near the courthouse, the butterfly-themed photo cutout, and the Georgetown poppy mural backdrop.

Restrooms

Restroom options were available in multiple parts of the event. On the 6th Street side of the festival, temporary restrooms included several standard portable units, three larger accessible portable restrooms at ground level, and an air-conditioned restroom trailer. The larger accessible units offered more interior space than the standard portable units, but a mobility scooter may not fit inside. The trailer required stairs to enter, so it was not accessible for those needing step-free access.

A permanent public restroom building was also located near Founders Park on the quieter end of the festival. That building included an exterior ramp, but when we passed by, the line was long enough that we chose not to attempt using it. Because we did not access the interior, we cannot comment on stall layout or maneuvering space.

Festival signage included restroom direction markers, and the official festival map also showed multiple restroom locations, which would be worth reviewing in advance if restroom access is a priority during your visit.

Crowds

Expect large crowds for this very popular annual event, especially around the parade route, vendor areas, food sections, and major stage performances. Crowd levels may vary quite a bit depending on the time of day and what is happening throughout the festival.

For mobility scooter users, the busiest sections may require extra patience when people are stopping to shop, eat, or gather for entertainment. At times, the crowd levels felt overwhelming for us in the busiest areas, while the outer streets and quieter sections felt noticeably less crowded.

Event Organization & On-Site Support

The event was well organized, with visible Red Poppy Festival staff and volunteers stationed throughout the festival, particularly around vendor areas and stage spaces. Everyone we interacted with was friendly and easy to approach, which added to the overall sense that the event was running smoothly.

One feature that stood out was the visible public safety presence throughout the event. Georgetown Police, Fire Department, and EMS had adjacent support booths, including a clearly designated first aid station for anyone needing assistance, while additional personnel were positioned throughout the festival and communicating by radio. An ambulance was also nearby if needed, and the overall setup created a strong sense of safety and organization during our visit.

Best Times to Visit

The best times to attend may depend on what parts of the festival matter most to you and the weather outlook. Friday evening offers the opening concert atmosphere, while Saturday brings the fullest schedule of activities and some of the heaviest crowds, particularly around major scheduled events like the parade and evening performances.

For those hoping to experience the Saturday parade, arriving very early is important for both parking and securing a viewing spot. Visitors who prefer a less crowded experience may find Sunday to be a more manageable option, while warmer temperatures, direct sun exposure, or changing weather conditions may also influence when you choose to attend.

Event Highlights

One of our favorite moments during Red Poppy Festival happened when we paused in a shaded corner of the Square where an accordion player was performing beneath the trees. He happened to be playing You Are My Sunshine, which immediately caught our attention and made us stop for a while.

With the breeze moving through the trees and a quieter spot to take a break from the busier festival crowds, it became one of those simple moments that made the day feel especially memorable. The musician was warm, cheerful, and genuinely kind, adding to the welcoming community feel that makes Georgetown events so enjoyable.
